Tooth Implant Process

If you need to have one or several teeth replaced because of damage arising from an illness or infection, then dental implant surgery may be the answer. The process can be lengthy, but the result is a beautiful smile with natural-looking teeth.

One of the first steps in tooth replacement is taking a mold of the teeth and gums. This can help the dentist get an idea of where the other teeth are positioned so that he or she knows what size to make the new tooth. One tooth or several can be replaced depending on the structure of the mouth. There will likely be x-rays made of the jaw bone to make sure there is enough support for the new tooth.

Once the dentist sees that the new tooth can successfully be placed, a small screw will be placed in the jaw bone. This is what will support the implant. It may take a few months for the jaw to heal after the screw is placed. Once the jaw and gum have sufficiently healed, a cap is placed before the new tooth is attached to the screw.

The new tooth can be colored so that it resembles and functions the rest of the teeth in the mouth. With proper care, your implant will last for many years.
