Plaque is common but it should never be ignored. Caused by
bacteria, plaque often leads to gingivitis, cavities, and other serious gum
diseases, which is why it is important to take care of your mouth, teeth, and
gums to avoid buildup.
Causes of Plaque
The food you consume contributes a lot to plaque buildup.
Because this sticky material often accumulates in areas that a toothbrush can’t
reach, they collect bacteria until they start hurting the gums. Sugary foods
are the most common cause of plaque. Among these include bread, cereal,
crackers, and other starchy foods. These foods trigger mouth bacteria to
produce acids that are bad for your teeth and gums. When plaque gets worse, it
irritates the gum until it starts being prone to bleeding. When ignored, it
often results in tooth loss.
Treatment of Plaque
Regular brushing of your teeth is the most effective way to fight
plaque. Using a soft-bristled brush, clean your teeth at least two times a day.
When choosing a toothbrush, make sure it perfectly fits your mouth and reaches
every corner, including the hard-to-reach areas. Opt for an antimicrobial
toothpaste with fluoride as it prevents tooth decay. You may also want to floss
for better cleaning and prevention of gum diseases.
