Even during the pre-historic period, humans have been trying to recreate
the structure of teeth through stone, ivory and wood. Since then, the dental
field has progressed into developing the promising potential of dental implants
as replacement for natural human teeth.
It was during the 17th century when dentists started using
tooth transplants to recreate the human mouth, and now mini-implants are
starting to get attention.
These mini-implants were used for interim implants to support prostheses
with the intent of removing them once the larger implants can be put in
service. However, during the waiting period, dentists have found out that
mini-implants have successfully integrated into the bone. This occurrence has
lead them to believe that mini-implants can be used for a longer term, just
like a conventional implant.
One of the things that has to be considered when getting implants is the
strength of one’s jawbone. With mini-implants there is faster osseointegration
process causing less discomfort to the patients. This quality makes the process
ideal for the medically compromised, aging and financially compromised
patients.
