While oral health is the main reason to visit a dentist regularly, a dentist may also sometimes be able to detect the presence of more serious diseases before you or your primary care physician does.
Diabetes
Many people have diabetes for some time without realizing it. Diabetes affects the blood supply to the gums, and as a result, people might notice more infections in their mouth. While most people with gingivitis do not have diabetes, gum disease can be a first indicator of the disease.
Cancer
Dentists can be on the front line in detecting mouth cancer, but other types of cancer may also have dental symptoms. Gingivitis can also be an indication that a patient has leukemia. Dentists may suspect a diagnosis like this when the patient reports other symptoms such as weight loss and exhaustion.
Heart Disease
It is believed that there is a link between heart disease and dental disease. Gum disease on its own can actually increase a person's risk of developing heart disease. Gum disease is also a risk factor for diseases related to blood vessels. These links are not definitive, but taking steps to keep both the heart and the mouth healthy is important.
Even serious dental problems such as gum disease are no reason for panic. Usually, they do not indicate an underlying health problem. However, detecting and treating dental problems sooner rather than later may mean they are more easily resolved.
