According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, there will be 45,750 new occurrences of oral cancer in America this year, and the disease will cause approximately 8650 deaths. Of the newly-diagnosed patients, only around half are expected to survive within the next five years. This figures are extremely troubling, and yet only a few are aware of pharyngeal or oral cancer. Over the years, numerous campaigns have been launched to assist in the treatment and information dissemination of some cancer types, specifically lung cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. However, not much information is distributed concerning the other cancer types. According to the National Cancer Institute, the requirement to be classified as a “common” cancer type is a minimum annual incidence of 40,000, which should qualify oral cancer.
